Our History

The story of Portmore Community College begins in 1992, during a pivotal time in Jamaica's educational landscape when the nation was committed to expanding access to tertiary education for all its citizens. Founded as part of this national initiative, PCC opened its doors in Portmore, St. Catherine, with an ambitious vision and a modest beginning of just 38 students under the pioneering leadership of Miss Shirley Whylie, the college's first Principal. From its inception, the college demonstrated remarkable foresight in educational programming. In the same year it opened, PCC launched its Continuing Education programmes, recognizing the diverse learning needs of the community and the importance of lifelong learning. This early commitment to comprehensive educational services set the foundation for what would become a hallmark of the institution - accessibility and inclusivity in higher education. The dawn of the new millennium marked a significant milestone in PCC's expansion story. In 2001, the college established its satellite campus in Old Harbour, with the official inauguration taking place in 2002. This strategic expansion transformed a former primary school site into a modern educational facility, complete with a dedicated library, hospitality laboratory, and state-of-the-art computer labs. The Old Harbour campus represented more than just physical growth; it embodied PCC's commitment to bringing quality education directly to communities across St. Catherine. Under the current leadership of Principal Dr. Austin Wright, Senior Vice Principal Dr. Andrea Nickle-Higgins, and Board Chairman Mr. Donmayne Gyles, PCC has evolved into a respected institution accredited by the University Council of Jamaica. The college now offers a comprehensive range of programmes, from Bachelor's degrees in Business Administration and Social Work to Associate degrees and certificate programmes, along with the innovative Sixth-Form Pathway Programme that ensures seamless transitions to tertiary education. Today, Portmore Community College stands as a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and community commitment. With continuous improvements to its infrastructure, expanding enrollment, and unwavering focus on experiential learning and career preparation, PCC continues to fulfill its founding promise of providing equal opportunities through education. The college's journey from 38 students to a thriving multi-campus institution reflects not just institutional growth, but the realization of countless dreams and the transformation of an entire community through the power of accessible, quality higher education.
